The workshop will take place over 4 weeks; Saturdays, August 22, August 29, September 5, & September 12, 2026. 1:00- 4:00 PM each day.
You will learn how to knit in the round using magic loop, how to cast-on for toe-up socks, how to increase (KFB/Knit front back), how to decrease (K2tog/knit 2 together and P2tog/purl 2 together), and how to do a stretchy bind off.
HOMEWORK FOR WEEK 1: Students are asked to trace their bare foot onto a piece of cardboard or cardstock (cereal box works) and knit a gauge swatch in the yarn you plan to use in three needle sizes; US 1, US 1.5, and US 2. Cast-on 32 stitches and knit one inch with US 1, then one inch with US 1.5, and then one inch with US 2. You should get 8-9 stitches to the inch.
Week 1: We will go over different sock construction methods, take measurements of our feet to make socks that fit, and then cast on a single toe-up sock using magic loop.
Week 2: We will talk about heels and set up to knit the heel and gusset (NO picking up stitches).
Week 3: We will have a “rest” week so you catch up or begin knitting the leg of your sock. We may meet to just knit together and do a Q&A time.
Week 4: We will talk about different types of bind offs and choose one that has enough stretch to get your sock onto your foot, then knit the cuff and finish your sock.
Students should bring their own needles (US 1, 1.5, or US 2) in either wood or metal, and their own fingering weight yarn in any pattern/color combination they choose staying away from all black, navy and dark brown for ease of seeing stitches.
If students are unsure about what yarn or needles to use, they may contact the instructor, Yvonne Jones, at jones_yvonne@lilly.com.
